The NCP was created in 1991 in response to studies that showed the presence of contaminants in the Arctic ecosystem. Many of these contaminants were long-range in nature, meaning that they had no Arctic sources. The three main contaminant groups of concern are heavy metals, radionuclides and persistent organic pollutants.
